To live in Avila Beach is like being on vacation…permanently.
Avila Beach offers the best of both worlds. One world is a vintage California beach town whose residents are devoted to keeping the rapture of the “Avila life” a secret. The other world is a divine collection of rolling hills and valleys interspersed with wineries as well as avocado, walnut and apple farms. Avila Beach is truly one of the hidden jewels of San Luis Obispo County.
Tucked away in a small cove just five miles south of the city of San Luis Obispo, Avila is the envy of many coastal towns due to its extraordinary micro–climate. It leaves its residents boasting sunny skies while the neighboring beach areas are socked in with relentless fog. Avila residents also delight in outdoor mineral spring spas, golf by the sea, boogie boarding, wine tasting in mystic canyons, fine and casual seaside dining, ocean kayaking, panoramic bike trails - all within a 5-mile radius. It’s a favorite gathering place for marine life as well, with dolphins and sea lions showing off for whomever will watch.
See? Just like being on vacation…
Port San Luis, well known for its historical 1873 Point San Luis Lighthouse, sits on the northern part of Avila Beach and is one of the most zealous fishing harbors on the Central Coast of California. Any given afternoon, residents frequent the Port San Luis Pier to buy fresh fish right off the boat, from salmon to swordfish, red snapper to tilapia just to name a few. Some of the greatest deep-sea fishing and whale watching excursions launch from Port San Luis. The Olde Port Inn restaurant sits at the very end of the pier and is the only place in the County that you can sit at a table, look down the center of it only to see the ocean!
Avila Beach is where the Bob Jones Trail can be found. This 2-mile (give or take) paved nature path is lined with oak, willow and sycamore trees, popular for jogging, biking, inline skating and dog walking. AKA the City to the Sea trail, the vision is one day for this trail to extend eight miles, linking the city of San Luis Obispo to Avila Beach.
In addition to fresh fish, fresh fruit and vegetables are also abundant in Avila. Every Friday evening, families gather in the heart of Avila for the oceanside farmers’ market to stock up on the healthier side of nutrition. For those looking for fun vs. healthy, kettle corn, hot dogs and bounce houses are also permanent weekly fixtures. During May through December, the Avila Valley Barn welcomes residents with homegrown seasonal veggies and fruits, fresh baked pies, a homemade ice cream parlor and tractor hay rides. They even have a barnyard petting zoo.
The point here is that Avila Beach is a must see when looking for property in SLO County. Boredom is not a word you hear often around these parts.
